There, the El Remanso indigenous community is located, where we will settle in for dinner and spend the night in a tourist inn
of the Puinave indigenous people.

The accommodation has electricity from 6 am to 9 pm.

Before going to bed we will receive all the recommendations for the development of the activities of the following day.

  • Tonight you will sleep in a shared room, with 2 single beds, or in a single room paying the supplement.

Day 2

MAVICURE HILLS – EL REMANSO COMMUNITY

Depending on the weather conditions of the day, we will visit Cerro Mavicure. If it is raining, the lichen on the rock makes it very slippery and prevents its ascent.

If we cannot climb this hill, it will be postponed to the next day and instead we will do other activities with the inhabitants of the community, such as touring the savannah to admire the Inírida flower or visiting and bathing in Caño San Joaquín, whose characteristic wine-red color is due to the tannin of the leaves of the trees.

At the end of the afternoon we will return to the camp to have dinner and rest.

NOTE:

  • Tonight you sleep in a shared room, with 2 single beds, or in a single room paying the supplement

Day 3

MAVICURE HILLS – MATAVEN FOREST.

After breakfast, depending on the activities carried out the previous day and following the instructions of the local guides of the El Remanso indigenous community, we will travel through the Amazon savannah to see the Inírida flower.

After the activity, we will have breakfast and head to the dock with our suitcases to take the boat and travel to the Piaroa ethnic community of the Sarrapia – Mataven community.

During the trip we will make stops for lunch in Inírida and we will sail the Guaviare River to visit the Estrella Fluvial (Ramsar Site) located at the mouth of the Guaviare, Inírida and Atabapo rivers on the Orinoco.

We continue our journey along the Orinoco River to the great Matavén jungle, where we will settle in Sarrapia, an indigenous community of the Piaroa ethnic group, and at the end of the afternoon, once settled in the community, we will have dinner and rest.

NOTES:

  • Depending on the weather, we will stop in Castillito
  • Tonight you will sleep in a shared room with 2 single beds, or in a single room paying the supplement

Day 4

SELVA DEL MATAVEN

Then we will return sailing along the Caño Frutas to the Sarrapia Indigenous community to continue with the activities of learning about the crafts and taking a walk through the community.

After finishing the morning session we will have lunch.

In the afternoon session we will resume the activities with the cultural display of the Piaroa indigenous people in the art of arrow, the work process of the wild yuca, and a crafts class by the women and if the weather is good we will be able to see the sunset over the gallery forests of the Caño Fruta.

We will finish with dinner and rest.

Day 5

MATAVEN – TUPARRO

After breakfast we will leave the Matavén jungle to continue our journey along the Orinoco River to El Tuparro National Park.

The estimated journey time is three and a half hours until we reach Puerto Mantequero, from there we will make a transfer from the Orinoco River to the Tuparro River. This journey is done on foot for one hour and forty minutes through the high plains savannah of Tuparro. There is also the possibility of making this journey in a truck, but this service is not always available, so it is better to be prepared for the walk. (It is important to pack everything in a comfortable backpack)

After making the transfer we will arrive at the shore of the Tuparro River where we will sail for 10 minutes to return to the Orinoco and continue sailing to the HUAJARI DEL ORINOCO camp, close to the Tambora facilities, where we will settle in for two nights.

Once we are settled in we will have lunch and take a refreshing swim on the camp beach.

If the weather is good we will be able to see the sunset over the Orinoco, then comes dinner, the next day’s program and rest.

NOTE:

  • Tonight you sleep in a shared room, with 2 single beds, or in a single room paying the supplement

Day 6

TUPARRO: CERRO DEL GUAHIBO AND MAIPURES RAUDAL AND TOMO RIVER

We will start the day with breakfast, then we will visit the Guahibo hill, a rocky outcrop that is part of the geological formations of the Guayana Shield.

The Guahibo hill is approximately 300 meters above sea level and to reach the top you must walk for approximately three hours, including the time we take to observe the landscape. From the top of the hill you have a spectacular panoramic view of the savannahs and forests of El Tuparro Park, and you can also see the Orinoco River and its imposing Maipures rapids. During the walk we will find some species of birds such as eagles, woodpeckers, parrots and toucans. The path that we will take to the top of the hill is traced by a forest of rocky outcrops which allows us to appreciate some species of palms and trees that are used by indigenous communities for the construction of their houses.

Then we will visit the beach of the Tuparro stream to take a refreshing bath and appreciate the scenic beauty of the area.

In the afternoon we will go out to take a walk through the imposing Maipures Stream, which was classified by the explorer and naturalist Alexander von Humboldt as the eighth wonder of the world.

After the tour we will navigate the Orinoco River for approximately 40 minutes to the mouth of the Tomo River, in this place we will be able to see the river dolphins and watch the sunset. The Tomo River is a tributary of the Orinoco, it is born in the department of Meta, in the municipality of Puerto Gaitán, it travels 800 kilometers from its source to the mouth, 270 kilometers of the Tomo River are part of the El Tuparro NNP.

We will return to our camp for dinner and rest.

During the journey we will pass through the Atures rapids, classified as the widest in the world and which are important for the subsistence fishing activity carried out by the riverside communities in the area.

In the rapids area we will take a walk of approximately one and a half hours to appreciate the place and take photographs.

After the walk we will continue our journey and make a stop in Cazuarito, a police inspection located on the bank of the Orinoco in front of Puerto Ayacucho, capital of the Amazonas State of Venezuela. We will take a short walk along the town’s dock and then have lunch.

After lunch we will board our boat to continue our journey to Puerto Carreño where we will spend the night (dolphin watching in the Dagua channel).

After the tour we will return to the reserve facilities to continue our journey along the Orinoco River to the mouths of the Bita and Meta rivers.

Our tour ends at the Puerto Carreño airport.

Travel tips

This is an adventure expeditions to one of the most remote regions in the country. The tourism infrastructure is almost nonexistent.

The expeditionary must be willing to walk under the sun, on the rocky and sandy terrain of the Orinoco savanna.

In camp sites there are no toilets nor showers, a portable latrine is installed and bath can be taken in the rivers, obviously without the use of soap.

It is required a walk of about 4 hours round trip in the savannah, with no major climbs and descents and without shadow to get to The Tuparro National Park. Each expeditionary should carry their own backpack with clothes and personal items for three days (the fewer things you carry the less weight!) What is not needed for the first three days can be left in the hotel in Inirida the first day.

  • As far as possible take the least amount of wrappers, cans or glasses and please, we return home all the inorganic wastes that we carry in our backpack «if you carry it in your backpack, you can return in your backpack»
  • Be previously vaccinated against yellow fever and tetanus
  • Don’t bring items that are typically used by the military (i.e. camouflage clothing)
  • Don’t bring or take toxic, psychoactive or hallucinogenic and alcoholic substances
  • Don’t bring jewelry or valuables – Rolex watches and Cartier earrings; please leave them at home!
  • During the trek, don’t separate from the group and don’t remain alone at any time.
  • Bear in mind that we will be staying in a very remote place and our hosts will do everything for us as best as they can, given the local conditions and culture.
  • We want that during our visit to these far, remote and often forgotten territories, all: guides, coordinators and tourists, we contribute to the economy of these regions and small towns,  buying in the stores, stores, bakeries and restaurants, their products and merchandise (such as sweets, chocolates, soft drinks, sweets, fruits, etc.) and acquiring local handicrafts. It is a small support through which we include these communities in the tourism value chain. If you like to consume very sophisticated foods or special diets (almonds, sugar-free chocolates, dried seeds or dehydrated fruits, for example), which you will not be able to get in the shops of the villages, we recommend you take them with you. Thank you for joining this initiative, this is called sustainable tourism!

Each participant should bring:

  • Water canteen, Thermo or Camelback, let’s avoid plastic or PET bottles and if we buy or take them we return them to our house!
  • Cotton clothes for warm weather, light colors, shirts with long-sleeves
  • Bathing suit
  • Towel
  • Hiking boots or tennis shoes with good grip
  • Additional tennis shoes or sandals
  • Cap or hat
  • Torch and extra batteries
  • Sunglasses
  • A small backpack for use while trekking
  • Poncho (rain cape) – waterproof
  • Personal hygiene items in small quantities
  • First aid kit (personal medicines)
  • Insect repellent
  • Sun block
  • Cash for tips, souvenirs and personal expenses
  • Personal documents (identity papers, ID cards, health cards)
  • Camera

Note: The maximum weight allowed on flights is 15 kilograms

Our contribution: When we visit places, where we know there are farmers or indigenous communities, we like to bring gifts to children, as a gratefulness for allowing us to explore their territory. We usually carry books, school supplies, pencils and colors! We invite you to participate!
