Santuario de Flora Isla de la Corota
The protected area consists of a small island of only twelve hectares in size, located in the north of the Cocha lagoon. The park also protects about 4 hectares of totora (reeds) surrounding the island. It was created to preserve a beautiful and unique cold forest that covers La Corota.
The Quillasinga aborigines inhabited the region of the lake approximately 500 years ago. At that time, about 600 indigenous people lived around a Dominican mission, near the current population of Encano. Today they still have great respect for the island, as they consider it a sacred site for their culture.
La Isla de la Corota is located inside the Laguna de la Cocha, which is located in the territory of the department of Nariño, in the jurisdiction of the municipality of Pasto.
