Mompox

Surrounded by the Magdalena River, bathed in sunlight, and standing on stone. This is Santa Cruz de Mompox or Mompós, the imposing yet subtle district of the department of Bolívar, declared a UNESCO World Heritage architectural site. ‘The Land of God’, as it is better known, boasts immense colorful mansions that have stood since colonial times, and their stories are told, sung, and played on every corner.
Stepping on Mompox lands is to have the fortune of knowing one of the worlds constructed by the writer Gabriel García Márquez, of glimpsing the golden sunsets that rise over the course of the Magdalena River, as yellow as the filigree threads traditionally woven with the art of goldsmithing. Mompox is to be walked on foot, with a fan made by the town’s artisans and with a hat or umbrella to protect oneself from the sun’s rays.
