Bird watching

With about 1876 species, Colombia is the number one country in bird diversity in the world. Additionally, the country is number three in South America with almost 70 endemic species after Brazil and Peru respectively listing 203 and 105. Colombia is a paradise for birdwatchers with innumerable options in the cloud forest and páramos of the Andes or the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, the jungles of the Amazon and Chocó regions, the Eastern Plains, the lowlands of the Caribbean region, and the inter-Andean valleys.

Desert expeditions

En Colombia contamos con tres desiertos: uno ubicado en el departamento del Huila conocido como el Desierto de la Tatacoa, y queda cerca de la ciudad de Neiva. El segundo, es el Desierto de la Candelaria que está ubicado en el departamento de Boyacá, cerca de Villa de Leiva; allí podemos encontrar varios fósiles, pinturas rupestres, cascadas y cuevas. Por último, está el Desierto de la Guajira, que queda al norte de Colombia. Allí podemos encontrar una gran reserva de carbón, explotado en una zona conocida como El Cerrejón. En este desierto vive un grupo de indígenas llamados Wayuu que conviven con una gran variedad de flora y fauna del desierto.

```html En el territorio de Boyacá se presenta una diversidad de accidentes geográficos que forman las regiones fisionómicas del valle del río Magdalena, la cordillera Oriental, el Altiplano Cundiboyacense y el piedemonte de los llanos orientales. Mountaineering expeditions

The longest mountain range in the world, the Andes enters Colombia in the Nudo de los Pastos in the south of the country, where it divides into two. In the Colombian Massif, the country’s main hydrographic star, it separates into three mountain chains that cross Colombia from south to north and create a rugged terrain, with peaks higher than 5.300 meters above sea level, expansive highland plains, deep canyons and broad valleys. These three mountain chains, crowned by perennial snow, boggy paramos, Andean rainforests, deserts and marshes, produce terrain that varies with altitude and whose fertile soils support an immense variety of crops. They are also where the majority of the country’s population live.

Tourism in Antioquia

Antioquia presents a significant geographical diversity as it combines all the elements of Colombian geography: sea, plains, mountains, plateaus, moors, rivers, marshes, and forests.​ The department is located in the northwestern area of Colombia, extending from the Atrato River in the west to the Magdalena River in the east, with a coastal strip on the Gulf of Urabá. Its coastal boundaries measure approximately 220 kilometers, making the department the second in the country in terms of coastline length on the Caribbean Sea, after La Guajira.​ It is crossed by two branches of the Andes mountain range, the Western and Central ranges. The Western range is located between the Atrato River and the Cauca River, with heights reaching 4,050 masl in two moors (Citará cliffs and Urrao moor), and the Central range between the Cauca River and the Magdalena River, with slightly lower heights (Sonsón and Belmira moors).

The Spanish arrived with the Conquest and colonization and brought slaves with them from Africa. For this reason Colombia is a multi-ethnic and pluri-cultural nation, where each region has its own characteristics that distinguish it from the others. Thus you can talk of an Andean culture that strongly feels its European ancestry; of a Caribbean culture that is an amalgam of Indian and African inheritance; a Pacific culture with African roots, and of the culture of the Orinoquia and the Amazon that is basically Indian. This complex process of mestizaje is not only expressed in the country’s traditions, handicrafts and cuisine, but also in its arts, from architecture, painting and sculpture to literature, film and photography, and including music, dance and theater. Such is Colombia’s ethnic, linguistic and cultural wealth that it has over 87 Indian ethnic groups that represent 1.5% of the country’s total population and speak 64 native tongues that belong to 22 linguistic families; several million Afro-Colombians who represent nearly 16% of the population; over 30 million mestizo inhabitants with an immense variety of cultural expressions; nearly 12.000 gypsies who descend from Colonial times, and several immigrant groups in different regions of the country. In the archipelago of San Andrés and Providence, the population is principally of African origin and whose language is English.

We receive four migrations every year: Sea turtles, humpback whales, Migratory birds, and the arrival of the Herring.

Whale watching

See how 40 tons emerge hastily from the bottom of the ocean and disappear again into the depths in seconds. Beaches, cliffs and bays become the natural bleachers to see this unique spectacle of nature. The place is the perfect venue to watch the whales and their calves swim in a safe, and especially respectful way. It is important to explain that the activity of whale watching has to be respectful of the space these beautiful animals need, as they are vulnerable mammals and their survival depends highly on tourists’ conduct. In Colombia, from Nariño all the way to Chocó, in the Pacific Ocean, one can see the arrival of the whales every year between July and November. Humpback whales swim in every ocean in the world. However, the quality of the water, its depth and temperature, as well as the wind an environment features, have an influence on their presence in the Colombian Pacific every year. Patience is one of the characteristics tourist have to have when they see whales; sometimes they can spend hours on end without ever seeing one of these cetaceans nearby. Influence on the state of the ocean. There are more chances to see them when the waters are calm and the sun is not completely out in full force, in other words, during the early hours of the morning or late at night.
